Do most parents communicate with their children and adolescents about internet use and risks?
A recent survey from i-SAFE Inc. revealed an internet generation gap.
The majority of children and adolescents reported that their parents have not discussed internet safety with them:
- 49% of 5-8 graders "Never" (24%) or "Rarely" (25%) discuss e-Safety with their parents.
- 64% of high school students "Never" (27%) or "Rarely" (37%) discuss e-Safety with their parents.
There is an apparent discrepancy in the number of parents who believe that they have discussed these issues with their children and the experience of youth:
- 88% of parents indicate that they have established rules for their children’s Internet activity.
- More than 1 in 3 students (38%) indicate that they do not have Internet usage rules that have been set by their parents or guardians.
