15) Ocala National Forest – The world’s largest sand pine forest, the Ocala in Central Florida is one of the last homes for the Florida black bear. Hike part of the Florida National Scenic Trail, or canoe through lush tropical forest down Juniper Creek, from the Juniper Springs Recreation Area.

16) Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art – Near the theme park delights of Orlando, in pretty Winter Park, is a huge collection of colorful Louis Comfort Tiffany artwork. It includes famous leaded-glass windows like “Oyster Bay,” and an entire chapel that Tiffany designed and created for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago.

17) Miami Metrozoo – The 900 or so animals will probably be livelier in their large habitats during a morning visit, especially in the summer months, but the zoo’s monorail and tram can help those tired feet. The Petting Zoo and Wildlife Show are kid favorites.

18) Florida Aquarium – There are aquatic plants and creatures from all over Florida and the world at this excellent facility in Tampa. Otters cavort in the Wetlands section, and visitors love the daily Penguin Promenade and five different types of sharks in the Shark Bay. Children six and up can don modified SCUBA gear for a guided Swim with the Fishes in the 500,000 gallon Coral Reef Gallery, and young ones like to splash in the toddler-friendly outdoor water park area.

19) Wakulla Springs State Park – Perfect for a stop-off between Tallahassee and Jacksonville, the park is home to a massive freshwater spring, one of the delights of northern Florida and a great excuse to go swimming. Take one of the glass-bottom boat tours to get crystal-clear views of spring wildlife below the boat. The comfy Lodge in the middle of the Park was built in 1937, and still welcomes guests for meals or an overnight stay.

20) Dolphin Research Center – Get wet in the Florida Keys with a variety of structured, educational dolphin swimming encounters in either shallow or deep water. The shallow water sessions are open to all ages, and there are also sessions tailored to people with disabilities and special needs. Protected lagoons house both Atlantic bottlenose dolphins and sea lions.
