Democracy in Action (continued)
by John Pearson
Two kids said that Obama got their vote because he wants kids to go to school on Saturday and Sunday. I’m not sure that sort of thing would get him many votes from teachers, though.
Finally, one of my less astute kids said that she voted for Barack because she wanted him to be the new president of Dallas, Texas.
Regardless of misconceptions or incorrect information, it’s good that the kids got so excited about the democratic process. Hopefully, president Obama will serve them well by letting them stay in Dallas and fulfilling their other wishes.
Except for that one about school on the weekends. Even teachers need sleep once in awhile.

He has degrees in mechanical engineering from Duke University and Texas A&M, so most consider his math abilities adequate enough to teach nine-year olds. He is also the author of Learn Me Good (Lulu, 2006), a funny, fictionalized account of his first year in education. Read more at www.learnmegood.com

After the real election results, naming Obama the winner, I had a student say something funny to me. She said, "Isn't it strange how the school voted for McCain and then Obama was elected president?" Yes, I thought- it's as if your school vote didn't have a significant impact on the national results.
Gotta love kids!
Thanks for writing! =)
