Q:

Since my 11 year old has been diagnosed with vasovagal syncope, she is nervous to leave the house. Any suggestions?

Every morning she gets bad stomach aches that tend to go away as the day goes on. She also gets nervouse before leaving the house even to go shopping!!! The cardiologist told her she is healthy and she has nothing to worry about. All she keeps thinking about is the nurse who did her tilt table test and told her way too much information about syncope.

What the Expert Says:

this is a case for education.  Ask your daughter to speak to her pediatrician.  We can be reassuring about many things.  Syncope can be hard to deal with in school
but I would continue to reinforce that rest, hydration and normal activity are fine and preventative. Staying home will not help her lose her fears.
