How do I help my 12 year old son reach his potential in school?

I know my son has the potential to be a good student in EVERY class; his motivation is nill; on a good note has brought his French grade from D to B, but the subject I really thought he'd excel in (science) he suddenly has an F in. His teachers mostly say he has no motivation; is it the age?? He has the best of everything a modern day 12 year old could need or want; at a loss here except to get as tough disciplinary-wise with him as I can - HELP!!

It is very important to find something that your son loves to do and focus on that. He needs to feel good about something in his life. He needs to feel that he is capable of succeeding in something in life on his own. This could be sports, music, art, people skills. Whatever it is - always give him a chance to feel something positive. Hopefully through strong self-esteem he will become more motivated to do well in school.
