There is a difference of not “wanting” to go to school and “refusing” to go to school. Since you did not say your son was refusing, we will assume that he is still attending school but would rather not be there.
What are the reasons your son is giving for not wanting to go to school? Is he being bullied or is he afraid for some reason? How is he doing academically? Has he had a sudden change in friends or social activities? Is there any indication he could be using drugs or alcohol?
It may be a good idea to alert your son’s school counselor or school social worker. They can talk with your son and then possibly have you join in at a later date. They can also refer you to a Child and Family Therapist. If you find the school is not helpful or cooperative, please contact your local United Way for referrals. They can usually be reached by dialing 211 on your phone, or by consulting your local phone book.
If you need further assistance, our crisis counselors are available 24 hours, 7 days a week to help parents and kids of all ages. Thanks again for reaching out and best wishes to you and your son.
