I Let x stand for length of the shorter river the length of the bigger river will be the length of a shorter river plus 231.
when we add the length of the two rivers we will 13,469
x ( the length of the shorter river) + (x + 231) the length of the bigger river= 1369.
x+x+231=13,469
we will combines like terms
2x +231=13,469
when solving equations, our goal is to find the value of x, to get the value of x we need to get the x by itself. to do that first we need to get rid of any constant on the x side in our case we have the 23. to get rid of the 231 we need to minus 231 from each side of the equal sign.
2x + 231-231=13,469-231
2x=13,238 we need x not 2x we need to get rid of the 2 by dividing both sides by 2.
2x/2=13,238/2
x=6,619 Km
the longer river will be:
6,619 + 231= 6,850
