My son has similar issues, has learning disabilities, has been to a school just for kids with some form of autism spectrum disorder, but is otherwise a friendly, somewhat outgoing, adorable kid, and innately bright.  Part of his issue has been he's afraid of the future and uses avoidance to cope.

It didn't give me solutions, but I found Leonard Sax's book "Boys Adrift" a good read because it helped me understand a widespread (according to Sax) phenomenon.  I recommend it.  Link below to his website, and all of the major booksellers have it.
