What can be expected for 2nd grade mathematics?

My daughter attends second grade at a parochial school in Ct. She is still only completing single number addition and subtraction. Also, she is counting on her fingers or using tallies to complete her sums. Please let me know if her class is behind; as the first grade teacher had the class doing the same mathematics last year; and are her counting methods normal. Thankyou.

My daughter is also currently in the second grade, and she began with single digit addition and subtraction last fall, but has progressed into double and triple digit math problems. I suggest talking to your child's teacher to learn more about why your daughter is learning what she is, and to request more challenging work if she is ready for it.
