What the Expert Says:

I would pose this question to your pediatrician and ask her about an opinion.  Hyperactivity may come with oppositional defiant behavior and visa versa.  Ask her to evaluate the situation at a physical examination and conversation with you about further evaluation.

Hi kimmerchris - Most 3 year olds have a hard time sitting still for more than a few minutes at a time  - they're very busy exploring their world!

It's also pretty typical for kids that age to have a hard time following directions.  The best thing you can do is keep your instructions to her very simple - one step at a time.  So instead of saying "go get dressed", you may need to say, "First put your shirt on" (and wait for her to accomplish that task).  Then move on through the rest of the steps one at a time.  Be sure to give lots of praise when she does what you ask so she learns that it feels good to be a good listener.

The fighting is obviously more concerning and something you'll have to really focus on correcting.  Keep telling her how important it is to solve problems with her friends or siblings using her words not her body.  If she does fight, she should be removed from that situation for a few minutes or even permanently so she begins to learn that if she does something to hurt someone else she won't get to stay at the park, playdate, etc.

Hope this helps!
