There are many play-based activities that you can do to help prepare your child for handwriting.  Helping your child develop fine motor skills is the precursor to writing.  Your child will gain small muscle strength/dexterity in his/her hands, as well as hand-eye coordination through fine motor skill practice.  Spend 10 minutes at time playing with play dough, a puzzle, picking up coins, placing stickers, or coloring with SMALL crayons (broken in half even better)!  In order to help stabilize your child's wrist, have him draw on a vertical surface like an easel or paper taped to a wall.  You can also have him draw on all fours using the floor as a surface to stabilize his wrist. And when he is doing the actual writing, have him sit at a table where his feet can touch the ground and the height of the table encourages natural shoulder and wrist position. :)
