Q:

How can I get my 5 year old motivated to write.

My 5 year old loves to learn. But when it comes to getting her to write, it's like pulling teeth. I have gone through a lot of writing activities to make it fun for her. We made an ABC game the other day and she loved it. She traced all of her letters upper and lower case. Now I have tried to do other activities using the same idea, but she just looses interest. We do activities for her fine motor skills, and she seems to use her hand muscles very proficiently. I try not to push her so hard in the writing area. I home school, so I am open to suggestions.

What the Expert Says:

Hello and thank you for writing to JustAsk!

Here are a few suggestions:

1- Keeping a journal with letters, words, sentences and drawings!

2- Having a relative or friend be her "pen pal" where they exchange letters.  Even if delivered and not mailed.

3- Use the computer to be creative and draw or write!

4- Play school with her as the teacher!

Have fun!
