6th grade boy - great grades, not so great actions
I have an 11-year-old son who just entered Middle School. Grades are fantastic (straight A's, occasional B). However, he has always had questionable behaviors in class. Here recently, its a lot of talking, throwing things like paper, erasers, etc. He is now on the principal's radar, and looking at a suspension.
For the most part, none of his behavior has ever been to the point of horrible, but there is a definite lack of respect there for the teachers, unless he likes one.
We've tried both the incentives as well as the consequences, but not sure what else to do.
One thing to note - he is a triplet, so very competitive. He is also in all advanced courses.

As a special Education teacher in training there are a few things that spring to mind.
Has the school considered having your son peer tutor other students? if he is getting A's and B's it seems like he would be a good candidate to help others.
Redirecting this energy will give him the Student in the gifted programs also need special education in order to keep them stimulated. Think of it like this, once you have seen a movie that has a great twist at the end, the movie is no longer fun to watch. So imagine sitting in a classroom all day when you already understand the lessons after 5 minutes.
It may be worth finding out what his teachers are doing to accommodate him or redirect his energy, perhaps extra breaks might help if his education is not suffering. I hate the over use of the label ADHD, however there are small accommodations for ADHD that can be used in the general edcation classroom regardless of the student. The peer-tutoring, extra breaks and such are just 2 of them.
Does the school have a special ed teacher? If so I would consider an informal chat regarding his behaviors and his academic performance being high, I think he just needs either more challenges and/or redirection of his talents and energy.
