I would first convert everything into a common unit:

1km = 1000 meters, so the left side of the equation would read:
7 *(1000 meters) + 8 meters = 7008 meters

The right side of the equation needs to equal 7008 meters.

Since 1km = 1000 meters, the right side of the equation reads:
6 *(1000 meters) + (a number of meters)

Setting up our equation we get:
7008 meters = 6000 meters + (a number of meters)

Subtracting the 6000 meters from the right side, we get:
1008 meters = (a number of meters)

The blank in question is 1008 meters.
