What the Expert Says:

Hello and thank you for writing to JustAsk!

It seems that you have many questions and I hope that you can find some support within your local area.

Please first try and contact your local school and ask them to convene a meeting of the teachers who are helping your child.  Perhaps together you can figure out what is a course of education for your child that suits his learning needs.  Also ask for any parent support or educational groups for families with children with autism.

You also may wish to check out these great websites which have open forums to ask parents who also have children with autism questions.

My 7 yr old son has mild autism, & when it's time to do home work, he gets very upset. You must be very patient, if he is doing spelling like c, for cat. I draw a picture of a cat on a bright yellow card. And do the cat sound with him meow. Make it fun and be happy as you talk him through the sounds , he will learn to enjoy his home work better.
