You baby would enjoy toys that are colorful and allow exploration of different textures, shapes, and sizes.  At age 8 months, babies like to put everything into their mouths and explore by chewing and mouthing.  Make sure that the toys you select are big (should not fit through the toilet paper roll!) and nontoxic.  Avoid toys made overseas as they may contain unhealthy compounds.  Let your child play with toys that explore his or her fine and gross motor skills, such as toys that allow to pull and push buttons.  Bright toys will stimulate your child's vision, and toys that require fitting pieces together will challenge his or her imagination.
