I assume you are talking about the Texas Assessment exam. With No Child Left Behind being fully implemented, students are required to pass 8th grade proficiency levels and can either be retained or go to summer school and then be retested.

I would strongly recommend you call your child's school and talk this over with the principal and/or guidance counselor. While I don't know of any exemptions it is certainly worth following through to gather more information that might be worthwhile.
