Q:
how to get my 9yr old son to stop talking in class?
Almost everyday my son gets in trouble for talking. They have a calender & get a stamp as long as they dont get in trouble his teacher will let us know y he didnt get a stamp. When I ask him what was so important that he couldnt wait he says he just wanted to know if one of his friends thought they were going to play dodge ball or another sport in P.E, or what his friend thought they were going to do next in another class or they tell a joke. The teacher said he's a great kid & raises his hand to talk to him but just likes to talk to his friends. He is getting straight A's in school. We have taken away his toys for 3weeks now bc he hasnt earned them back, he says hed like to play with his toys but as long as he has his books to read he can deal with it. He really doesnt seem to care much & i cant take away his books he loves to read! Help!

What the Expert Says:

Do you think that boredom could trigger your child's talkativeness?  Talk with the teacher.  Perhaps he or she cold involve your son in an individual project that would challenge him and help stay focused.

You could also talk with the teacher and suggest that your son's day is broken down into 1-hour segments.  If your child would not talk to his friends during during a segment, he would earn a sticker.  If all segments are completed without talking outside of class work, your son could get a prize that you and the teacher agree on.

Best regards.
