Q:
How can an adult get interested in reading?
"I am interested in helping myself. My kids read well. They are both in advance reading classes.I am struggling to read because I lost interest during the civil war in my country. I guessed at that time I was depressed. However, since I arrived in the USA, I just can't read an article of 100 words. I hope there is a program to help me."

What the Expert Says:

Hello and thank you for writing in to JustAsk!

First, BRAVO for wanting to read better and with more ease!  Reading is a life long skill.

Local colleges often offer an English as a Second Language Program and  assistive reading programs for adult learners.  Often these programs  have funding, so see if you can apply for any special scholarships.

Also, consider finding out about literacy programs as mentioned by a fellow poster.

Consider hiring, at your own expense, a new reading teacher who most likely could use a few extra dollars and would be very motivated to help tutor you with learning to read! (This could be a win-win situation!)

Ask your local library to show you books that help adults with reading skills.  Read short books, even children's books, magazines and about anything you can get your hands on!  Also, put the closed captioning function on your television (CC).  Although sometimes inaccurate during real time television programs, this has been a very successful method to teach reading and reinforce skills.

GOOD LUCK!!

There is definitely a program to help you.  Every town has a service  that offers free tutoring to help adults improve their reading and writing skills.  You work out a time once or twice a week to meet with your tutor at a time that fits both of your schedules.

To find the location closest to you, look it up in America's Literacy Directory.  You put in your zip code or city.  Then check the box "Help with Reading and Writing", then click "Search".  You'll get a list of nearby locations.  Click "Details" of a location to get the phone number to call.  Here is the link:

It's wonderful that you're determined to improve your reading skills.  It will help you tremendously.  I've tutored dozens of adults to improve their reading.  They all did well with determination and effort.  It improved their self esteem and helped them get better paying jobs.
