What the Expert Says:

Bravo for wanting to be active in your child's school!  In order to volunteer, most schools have PTA volunteer coordinators or a school staff member that organizes and facilitates volunteer parents. Ask at the front office for more information in the school.

Do not be surprised, however, to find out that you are needed in an area other than your child's classroom, such as the media center. Also, don't be surprised if volunteers are not requested as some schools have implemented this policy due to security reasons. Some schools only want parents to do "at home work" such as cutting out laminated shapes for a kindergarten classroom.

However, if you do get an opportunity to become a volunteer you will be able to get to know more about your child's school and meet other parents.

Good luck and enjoy!

Hi Skarlett,

I think it's great that you're available and interested in becoming a volunteer, but perhaps you meant your question for a particular school? If so, I recommend you discuss this opportunity with your child's teacher directly, or contact the school office (or the school's Parent Teacher Association) to see if they have a need for a volunteer elsewhere on campus.

If you don't have the school's contact info handy (and if the school is located in the U.S.), you can use SchoolFinder to locate its phone and/or address: http://www.education.com/schoolfinder/
