What the Expert Says:

Hi -
well, the day has passed and it is too late now for this year, but I would suggest that Columbus Day be used to acquaint young people about the the USA in 1492, what it was like then, and that the land was not unoccupied but occupied by many native peoples. Young people should learn that European settlers in general took the land from the natives and pushed them out (for example, the Cherokee Nation was force-marched to Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears), and that European diseases ravaged the populations of natives, leaving them all the more vulnerable to take over. To this day native Americans experience discrimination and poverty in the land that once was theirs.  Michael Bentley, Expert Panelist
