A good essay equation that can generally be used in every essay assignment is the following:
Although...Nevertheless...Because (a.k.a. ANB)
At the core of a good essay is a good thesis statement. ANB puts all the key components into the thesis without too much effort on your part.
For example:
"Intellectual property law in the United States has recently undergone record changes through the ratification of the 2010 America Invents Act. Although this legislation claims to support innovation and inventiveness, it nevertheless has aspects which could very likely undermine the ability of the independent inventor to take their products to market because of the fundamental change from First-to-Invent to First-to-File. This essay will outline the legislation, discuss the negative impact on micro-entities, and determine whether the new First-to-File system is indeed equitable."
In this example, you see there are three sentences. The first one introduces the topic. The second one has our ANB thesis statement. The third one tells the professor what to expect in the essay. Depending upon the page count, you can slice your essay up based on your ANB items. In this case, if the professor want five pages, you can write an introduction (1 page), a review of the legislation (2 pages), the impact on small and sole proprietor businesses (1 page), and finally a conclusion on whether the legislation actually benefited the 'Little Guy' (1 page). If you have to write ten pages, double your research and the number of pages you write.
You can always substitute other words for ANB once you've written the thesis, but ANB never lead me astray through several degrees, publications, and conference presentations. It helps to organize the argument and guide your research on a clear path.
Good luck!
