ksh123456 asks:

Is birth control appropriate for a 10 year old to help level out her hormones?

I have a 10 1/2 year old who has been experiencing higher sensitivity & emotions for about a year now.  I realize she could start her period any time and that it's probably hormones causing the problem, but what can I do about it.

I'd like to be able to give her something to level out her hormones but at the same time I don't really want to medicate her.  Is birth control appropriate for a 10 year old?  Are there other alternatives?  HELP!

What the Expert Says:

My first recommendation would be to have her pediatrician do a full physical examination to acess the problem.  Birth control is not usually prescribed for ten year olds who are rarely in full puberty.   Talk with her doctor after the exam for helpful suggestions on how to manage the behavior.
