Interesting question. Here's the scoop. Blend words are words which are made up of parts from two other words. Here's a few common ones that I think you will recognize plus a couple of web sites that will give you more examples.

intercom = internal + communication
motel = motor + hotel
hassle = haggle + tussle
smog = smoke + fog
telethon = telephone + marathon
