Is a boy ready to be potty trained if he won't ask to go?

We are trying to potty train my boy, but he never ask to go on the pottty. If we take him he will go, he will go in his underwear and thin say he peed. He has never ask to go to the bathroom or to the potty. Should we continue to try and potty train or wait a little while longer. He just turned 3
