A charter school is a public school that is often free of state rules and regulations.  They tend to be smaller that the average high school and often specialize in certain areas such a performing arts, science and mathematics, etc.

Charter schools often are very successful and can be quite unsuccessful.  Just make sure you check out the charter school carefully to make sure it meets your needs.
