Hi,

Every state has different Kindergarten eligibility rules but I don't know of any state that would allow your son to start kindergarten next year or even the year after that.  Most states require that students are five (or will turn five early in the school year) when they start.  California has one of the "youngest" starting policies and it requires that students turn five by December 1st the year they start school (your son would miss that cutoff date since his birthday is in January).  Many states have cutoff dates in August or September.

If you call your local school or school district they will be able to tell you your state's eligibility rules.  

Another year (or two) of preschool will help your son be more socially and academically ready for kindergarten.
