What the Expert Says:

First of all we are very sorry your son went through such a traumatic experience at school. We hope the school is holding the students who beat your son responsible, and that they have been given serious consequences. Hopefully the school notified the parents and the parents are taking charge of their children's behaviors.

As far as the school reimbursing you for medical expenses, we can not give legal advice on how you should proceed with this. It would seem that the parents of the children who did the beating should be the ones to pay for your son's medical expenses.

The most important factor here is the physical and emotional well-being of your son. Please continue to help him to learn how to stand up for himself and not to see himself as a victim. What happened was not his fault. Watch out for signs of depression. Encourage him to join in activities so he does not isolate himself and can meet friends with whom he has things in common.

Please reach out to our Hotline for more support. Our counselors are available 24 hours, 7 days a week to assist parents with many different issues including bullying. We can also be reached by e-mail and through our website for parents: www.parenting.org

Best wishes to you and your son. Keep reaching out!
Sincerely,

Cynthia, Counselor

What I've heard from other parents is that if a situation like this occurs is to threaten them with a lawsuit and the bullying usually stops.  Once they get threatened with the lawsuit, they usually take care of the problem and it doesn't go to court.  It is the school's responsibility to make sure your child is safe when they are in their care.
