What the Expert Says:

Hello and thank you for writing to JustAsk,

Please consider talking to your pediatrician and the school intervention team about your concerns. They should be able to assist you and perhaps help to obtain information about your son that will help with programming for him educationally.

Good luck!

It sounds to me (as a professional) as if he has a learning disorder which is affecting his reading and written language skills.  Often this isn't noticed until around fourth grade.  As the workload increases, and he has to do more independently, he begins to fall behind.  It would be a good idea for him to be assessed formally so that these issues can be addressed.  Glasses often aren't enough to address ocular-motor weaknesses, and these, too, need to be evaluated by a paediatric Optometrist who could prescribe a specific visual therapy programme for him.
