You have raised a really good question.  The answer depends on each individual college.  Some look at the grade point average regardless of how tough courses may be for students.  Other colleges look at the quality of each course.

My recommendation is to work with your school guidance counselor, but my experience recommends taking the tougher courses because they will prepare you to be more successful in college.
