Q:

Concerned about third grader who lacks confidence in writing.

"I am concerned. I have an 8 year old who in second grade loved to write and now in the third grade she is lacking a bit of confidence in herself. I try to reassure her but she is afraid."

Hi, In third grade, writing becomes more complicated (see this article for more on that thought: http://www.education.com/magazine/article/third_grade_writing/ ).

Here is an info center with a variety of tips to help you encourage your young writer: http://www.education.com/topic/writing-supporting-your-child/

There are many activities and worksheets on Education.com you can also leverage to help her practice:

Ask her teacher if there are certain writing abilities that you should work with your daughter to improve. You might also focus on the elements of writing that she is doing well -- to help build up her confidence in tackling the other elements she struggles with.

Make sure your daughter knows that no one is born a brilliant writer -- it takes years of learning and practice.
