The technical diagnosis of Oppositional Defiant Disorder is quite narrow. It requires the symptoms including arguing, temper outbursts, defiance of authority, annoying others etc... be present at least six months and NOT be present only in the presence of depression or psychosis. In addition the symptoms must occur more frequently than is typically observed in individuals of comparable age and developmental level.

The tricky thing about kids with Aspergers is that any of these issues can complicate the picture. In other words: these kids can have depression or anxiety, they may be more implusive, less flexible in their thinking, less socially mature and prone to ADHD symptoms all resulting in some level of delayed social development. They may have lower frustration tolerance and a higher level of irritability and sensitivity to environmental stimuli making them more prone to emotional reactions as well. All of these things may may them appear to have more symptoms common to ODD. However a technical diagnosis of ODD would not necessarily be correct.

Nevertheless, the child with Aspergers may very well be more difficult to parent than the more typical child. It is often beneficial to consult a professional or a local support group for help developing a parenting program. Standard parenting approaches are not always best. Clear limits, structure, routine and clear expectations are imperitive. However it is also important to recognize that kids with Aspergers are very special and need room to express themselves and to be who they are. Parent support groups can be very helpful as well.

The resource below has much additional information.

Take good care.
