Hi,

The U.S. Privacy Act of 1974 (including amendments) "governs the collection, maintenance, use, and dissemination of personally identifiable information about individuals that is maintained in systems of records by federal agencies." You can read the Act here: http://www.justice.gov/opcl/privstat.htm There is also a Wikipedia entry about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Privacy_Act_of_1974

The government has established this list of references and guides on the privacy act: http://www.doiu.nbc.gov/orientation/privacy_act3.html#References

If you are referring to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (also from 1974) there is more information about it here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Family_Educational_Rights_and_Privacy_Act

http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/20/1232g.html

http://www.access.gpo.gov/nara/cfr/waisidx_04/34cfr99_04.html

I hope these links are helpful to you. Thanks for asking!
