You have probably forgotten that you asked - sorry for the long delay in answering your question! Ginger is a plant root, a rhyzome to be precise. The root can be dried whole, or it can be dried and ground into a powder for seasoning. I don't know that there is a difference between ground ginger and powder except perhaps the degree of grinding it up (coarse vs. fine).
