Q:

Disrespectful Middle Schoolers

Help, I am new to teaching middle school and the students are walking all over me.  They are being very disrespectful and disruptive.  I need some creative ideas to regain control and let them know that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated.  Any suggestions?

What the Expert Says:

If there's anything middle schoolers are good at doing, it's being disrespectful, and it can be tricky to keep control of a classroom when they're goofing off!  Since our focus is more on parents and the kids themselves, we probably won't have the best answers.  One thing you might consider is making sure you have plenty of work for them to do and that you're very familiar with your lessons for that day.  Give them a couple minutes without anything to do, and it might get crazy.

For more information, you could try BoysTownPress.org.  We searched through it and found this category that might help:

See if you can find any of these books at the library.

Another thing you could do is talk to a more seasoned middle school teacher and see what he/she has to say.  They might have some really good tips.

Good luck!
