That path is the planet's orbit. The orbits were thought to be circles for centuries until Johannes Kepler calculated the orbit of Mars using data from his boss, Tycho Brahe, the Lord of Uraniborg Observatory in Denmark. For the 8 planets, it would be hard to eyeball their orbits and tell they were not circles, for they very nearly are.
