To confirm the cobweb substance is actually DNA, your student can use a microscope and images of DNA (here are some on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DNA ).
On the Biotechnology Online website (from the Government of Australia), I also found this similar experiment that encourages students to use multiple different foods to compare and contrast the extracted DNA material:
