CJBmum asks:

Is fear of aging in a 13 year old boy normal?

My 13 year old son does not want to leave childhood behind. He feels like his body is betraying him by growing and changing. His is funny, smart, popular and well adjusted, but he does not want to get older. Is this normal? He does not have a big long-term dream and any discussion of a career is quickly dismissed. Should I be worried?

What the Expert Says:

It is not unusual for a 13  y/o to act like Peter pan.  When you hit puberty you lose the speed and funny behavior that came before the acne, hair, and voice change.  Remind him we are not in charge of our bodies changes and to accept them.  Most young people do not have a concept of career only do they want college, vocational training or the military.  If he really sees aging as an issue, i would suggest exploring this with a counselor.

Best wishes.  remind him you love himWayne Yankus, MD, FAAP
