Mathematicians have found that pi = 3.14 but the question is how do we know that that’s the real value. How can we prove that pi = 3.14 for ourselves?
You can do this using the formula C = pi * d (circumference = pi * diameter). If you know the value for the circumference and diameter, then you will calculate the value of pi.
One way to do this is to measure a paper plate’s circumference and diameter (use centimeter as the unit). Measuring the circumference is easier as it’s the outer circle around the plate. The diameter might be a bit tricky to do as it’s the largest measurement across the circle – in other words, the middle or center of the circle. The best way to get the diameter is to fold the paper plate in half and then measure the folded line. After you have the measurement for circumference and diameter, you can calculate for pi. Have fun!
