Q:
To Be Or Not To Be Friends?
I have a little girl that is an only child. She plays outside with some others kids in the apt complex. They way she gets them to come over is by trying to bribe them with snacks or candy. Then when they get that they just leave her and wont even play with her. It really upsets me and I want to say something to the kids, but I cant really. Their parents obviously don't worry about them enough to let their kindergartner's, 1st and 2nd graders wonder all over the place. So what would be the point in me trying to say something. I am trying to teach her to be nice and friendly and people will like her for that, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. Any ideas please? I am a young mom and I welcome any and all advice....

What the Expert Says:

Your daughter sounds like a sweet girl who wants friends but doesn't yet understand that friendship isn't based on promised snacks or candy. She's not too young to start learning that friendship is a 2-way street and the key to real friendship (the only kind worth having) is mutual respect, caring and kindness. Instead of continuing to "bribe" these kids to be her friend, how about talking to her teacher and finding out which girls in your daughter's class would be a "good match" for her? You might find out that there are girls she already enjoys being with in school and even if they don't live in the same apartment complex as you, you might talk with their parents and arrange a play-date outside of school.

Those interactions with classmates would help your daughter get some "friendship successes" under her belt, which will give her more confidence in knowing that she's got a lot to offer in a friendship. When she realizes that, she won't need to "bribe" anyone to be her friend!

I hope this helps.

In friendship,
Annie
