Stue asks:

What would be good for an athlete to eat the day before & the day of a meet to stop the urge for a bowel movement?

My son is 15 and runs cross-country. The last few races he has sad he can't run as fast because he feels like he needs to go the bathroom. He would go before the race, but the urge to have a bowel movement is still there. He avoids the foods that he should, but is there something that he should be eating that would help?

What the Expert Says:

The best way to avoid "the call to stool" is to establish a regular morning habit within one hour of breakfast which for a 15 year old means breakfast and getting up earlier.  If the fiber in his diet is adequate, he should not continue to have the urge if he has evacuated sufficiently.
