Grade Retention in Illinois

My son is in 7th grade, and had a lot of problems getting homework completed and turned in earlier this year, but after getting him glasses and help with his ADHD his grades have significantly improved during this last quarter of the school year.  However, one grade is still an "f" and is not likely to be above an f for his final grade.  The schools policy is to retain kids that fail a "core class" such as this one.  What are my rights as a parent in this situation?  He tests 2 grades above his current grade level.
