It seems as if left out Part III of the activity, which was to demonstrate how to make a grayscale. From reading over the activity it seems to me that you would start with white on one end of a strip and end up with black on the other, with increasing darkness from one end to the other, say in 6 or 7 or so divisions. Then number those and use that in your table. That is my guess.
