How to make the "Homemade Thermometer" work?

My DAD & I are working on the thermometer but on step 5 It tells us to put our hands around the bottle & watch the liquid rise. It is not working. I also tried to add more alcohol the water but it still does not work. HELP :)

The purpose of placing your hands on the bottle is to warm up the liquid inside the bottle to test if the thermometer is working or not, but there are other ways to achieve the same outcome. Instead, for the last step, try placing the homemade thermometer in a bowl of warm water as a test and see if that works.
