Kids doing work around the house is called chores.  If you had a family store and forced them to work there, that might not be too good, but vacuuming, taking out the garbage, dusting, washing dishes, etc. these are all typical tasks to have children do.  If incentivized with earning money, say do this list of chores and you get your weekly allowance, chores can also help kids learn the value of money.
