I am not familiar with this specific project, but acid and base reactions with indicators (the solutions that change color based on the amount of acid or base present) are fairly common. The independent variable is the one you control, like amount of acid added, amount of base added, type of indicator used (each one gives a different range of colors depending on the acid/base/neutral pH of the solution), etc. Just think about what you control (independent variable) versus what occurs (dependant variable).
