What the Expert Says:

Hello and thank you for writing to JustAsk!

I personally love the stories and lessons contained within the books of Patricia Polacco.  She has so many books available that I am sure you will be able to find one to meet the needs of your daughter's class.

Also, applause to you for being involved with your daughter's education as a contributor within the classroom.

Have fun!

Hi,

Two books that my daughter really enjoyed being read to her when she was in kindergarten and first grade (through to today) are "Click Clack Moo: Cows That Type" and "Giggle, Giggle, Quack," both by Doreen Cronin. In my opinion, both have an easy-to-follow storyline, great illustrations, and humor. Their length (and ability to captivate) are good also, particularly given the attention span of your audience.

Here are some "Top Early Elementary Books" that various experts recommend: http://www.education.com/topic/books-early-elementary/

Here are some articles specifically focused on first grade books:

Consider also asking your daughter's teacher and/or your local librarian for recommendations.

Congrats on the invitation you received -- I hope all goes well with your reading!

It depends on the teacher and the school... but most first graders find Robert Munsch books hilarious. You can also try the Laura Joffee books (If You Give a Mouse a Cookie). Alexander and the Horrible No Good Very Bad Day is another good one. The True Story of the Three Little Pigs and Officer Buckle and Gloria are other GREAT reads. The choices are endless but if you are still uncertain, I'd ask the teacher for some guidance!

Any Dr. Suess book would be fantastic!  My kids especially like the "Sneetches" and "Thidwick, the Big Hearted Moose).
