You have a few things to consider - does your second grade student need the latest model? If not, you can get a first generation iPad and save a bit.

I would check with your child's school for specifications if this is to be used for school. There are choices such as: color, hard drive size, and wireless plan. Assuming your child doesn't need wireless internet on the go, a basic 16GB black/white iPad2 at $499 is a good choice for a child. Unless you're loading a lot of apps/programs/music/movies, you probably don't need the larger hard drive and the wireless plans can get pricey.
