5/6 meters per sign. If James needs 3 signs, then he needs 3 times 5/6 meters. I'm not sure which method you are doing to solve it:

5/6 * 3 = (5 * 3) / 6 = 15/6 = 2 and 3/6 = 2 and 1/2.

or with a calculator you can just do 5/6 = .833333  then multiply by 3 = 2.5
