What the Expert Says:

Happy, self-confident kids do not pick on other kids for sport. While it may be true that the victim has given the bullying absolutely no "reason" for this disrespectful behavior... in the mind of the bully, there IS a "reason." Often the reason has nothing to do with the victim and everything to do with the insecurity of the bully. Kids may torment other kids because they feel powerless in their home lives. Perhaps they are victims at home via the actions of parents, step-parents or siblings. Another way to think about it is that we are an extremely competitive society. We adults push our kids to beat out other kids on the playing field, in academics, and in the Popularity Game. Pushing our kids to one-up the other kid can turn them in pushy people who pick on more vulnerable kids (those who are perceived of as "different" in some way). This is a huge question and there are no easy or definitive "reasons" for bullying. My suggestion is that you talk to your kids about this question and see what they come up with. It's a great way to approach the topic and to talk about your family values when it comes to treating others with respect.

hey,
i am a third grade teacher with 2 kids of my own. Kids bully, because thay want other kids to feel like them selves, for ex. my 6 th grade daughter says peolpe are calling her b**** and ugly, you know why they do that because thay feel like they are, and believe if telling other kids that it will be make feel better or higher about them selves.
